Parole and Release
Various Criminal Justice Acts have regularly updated the parole system and, as a result, different systems apply depending on when the sentence was passed. For example, prisoners sentenced under the Criminal Justice Act 1991 are under a totally different parole regime than those sentenced under the Criminal Justice Act 2003 (CJA 2003). There are also minor changes to parole regimes, such as amendments made to licence dates by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. There are also constant changes to the system brought about by legal challenges. It is therefore always advisable to seek specialist advice on parole and licence dates given the many changes that have been made to the system. The broad outline of the system below is that contained in the CJA 1991 and the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and is followed by an explanation of the system introduced by the CJA 2003.
