Bullying

Schools are under a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Maintained schools are legally required to have a comprehensive anti-bullying policy. The DfES has issued guidance, and the wishes and feelings of the children at the school should be taken into account (art 12 UNCRC).

If a child is being bullied and the school does not have an anti-bullying policy, or it has a policy which is inadequate, or is not being applied, then a formal complaint can be made. This will normally be to the school in the first instance. Schools are required to have written, published, complaints procedures.

Independent schools are also required to have written polices on the prevention of bullying, and to give consideration to the DfES guidance.
