Housing records

If you are or have been a local authority tenant, have applied to be one, or have bought your council home, you have the right to see the council’s housing records on you, including unstructured information. Housing records often contain information about a whole family. Under the Data Protection Act, you have no automatic right to information about other family members without their consent, unless disclosure is reasonable in the circumstances. It will normally be regarded as reasonable to reveal information about other family members held in connection with a tenancy. However, if other members of your family have no objection, it may be safest to include signed statements from them saying that they agree to the release of any personal information held about them.
