Special Educational Needs

A child with special educational needs will have a learning difficulty that requires special educational provision to be made. A child will have a learning difficulty if:

  • He or she has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age.
  • He or she has a disability which either prevents or hinders him or her from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the LEA.
  • The child is under the age of five years and is, or would be if special educational provision was not made, likely to fall within the categories when over that age.
I f your children have started school late or attended school irregularly, they may be judged to have special needs, which may include remedial help with reading or even the necessity for them to go to a special school. There are rules about the way in which this decision on special needs is made, and if your children cannot read well you and your children will need someone who can help you through this process.
