Exclusion from School

In 1996 Ofsted found that Gypsy and Traveller children suffer a disproportionately high level of school exclusion. If your child is threatened with exclusion then you should contact your local Traveller Education Support Service or the National Association of Teachers of Travellers for initial assistance but may need to seek legal advice as well. When a school contemplates excluding a child, it must follow the guidance published by the DfES in January 2002. Failure to do so could result in a successful legal challenge. Parents are entitled to make representations before any decision is taken and there is provision for an appeal to be made against the decision to exclude a child from school.

If a child is excluded from a school the LEA will still have a duty to make arrangements for the provision of suitable education for that child.
