Local Resolution
Local resolution was previously called Informal Resolution. Local Resolution is used to settle around a third of complaints. The person who has made the complaint will be asked if they are willing to resolve their complaint through dialogue rather than through an investigation. This might involve a member of the police service meeting with the person who has made the complaint to establish the nature of their concerns. He or she would then meet with the officer complained against. An attempt is made to address the complainant’s concerns through an explanation, some form of apology or through the use of intermediaries.
Once Local Resolution has been chosen by the complainant there is no appeal against the outcome (although you can appeal against the process used). Local resolution is appropriate if you feel that you have been badly treated by the police but would be happy to settle for an apology or an explanation.
