    Public Advice Service

Liberty offers a free human rights advice service to members of the public. You can access our advice service by telephone or by submitting a written query.

PLEASE NOTE: IT CAN TAKE UP TO 12 WEEKS TO RESPOND TO WRITTEN QUERIES. WE ENCOURAGE ANYONE WITH AN URGENT QUERY TO CALL THE TELEPHONE ADVICE LINE.

Is the answer to your question on the YourRights website?
We use the information on the YourRights website to answer many of the queries we receive. If the answer to your query is on the YourRights website, by far the fastest way for you to receive an answer is to find the information yourself. Before submitting your query, make sure you have looked through the chapters dealing with the relevant areas of law, using the navigation bar on the right. You may also want to check our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) link above.

Can Liberty provide advice on all areas of law?
Liberty will provide advice and information on queries relating to human rights law, we are unable to assist with general legal queries. Advice given under this service is not to be considered formal legal advice.

We can only advise on the law of England & Wales.

Will Liberty take on my case?
Liberty is a small organisation with very limited resources. We receive a great deal of queries but only take up a very small proportion of these as cases. We focus our efforts on bringing test cases that we believe will result in positive changes to the law, usually by mounting a challenge under European human rights law or the Human Rights Act 1998. We do not have the capacity to do general case work.

I already have a solicitor, can Liberty still advise me?
Liberty does not consider it appropriate to advise individuals who are already represented by a solicitor. You should raise any questions or concerns about your case with your solicitor.

How long will I wait for a reply?
Due to the very large volume of queries that we receive, and our very limited resources, detailed responses can take eight to ten weeks.
